Guatemalan authorities have confirmed that twenty inmates affiliated with a gang designated by the United States as a foreign terrorist organization have escaped from a high-security prison.

The escape prompted an immediate nationwide manhunt involving police and military units.

Officials warned that the fugitives, believed to be linked to violent cross-border criminal activity, pose a serious threat to regional security.
